Ixchel

This September, Ixchel, the modern Mexican restaurant and tequila bar on the King’s Road, will unveil Interwoven, a new exhibition celebrating contemporary Mexican female artists, staged as part of the second Chelsea Arts Festival.
Bringing together a diverse group of Mexican artists working across painting, ceramics and textiles, Interwoven explores the many faces and visual languages of contemporary Mexican womanhood. The exhibition will feature works by Alicia Paz, Ana Benavides, Andrea Segura, Paola Estrella, Regina Torres, and Rita Fernández, transforming Ixchel’s lower-ground-floor space into a living gallery for one month.

The exhibition takes its name and inspiration from Ixchel, the Maya goddess after whom the restaurant is named. A deity of many faces and associations, Ixchel is closely connected with weaving – the art of bringing individual threads together to create a single, interconnected piece.

Interwoven takes this idea as its starting point, bringing together distinct artists, practices and perspectives and weaving them into one collective exhibition. Displayed within the convivial surroundings of Ixchel rather than a traditional gallery, the works become part of a space already designed around gathering, conversation and contemporary Mexican culture.
Alongside the featured artists, Interwoven will welcome Casa Agape, a Latin American talent house representing the region’s creative voices. Textile works by Caralarga and Onora will be woven throughout the exhibition, adding another dimension to its exploration of material, craft and Mexican identity.

The exhibition will officially open on 15 September, with a special invitation-only evening at Ixchel marking Mexican Independence Day and the beginning of the month-long show. A wider programme of special events will take place throughout the exhibition, with further details to be announced.

All works featured in Interwoven will be available to purchase.
Interwoven is curated by Valeria Nikitina in collaboration with Ixchel and Art Circles.
