Nigel Brickell

Nigel ‘Smutz’ Brickell is an entrepreneur, punk pioneer and legendary figure of Chelsea’s 1970s counterculture. At the height of the punk explosion, he opened Smutz, the iconic punk rock shop in Beaufort Market on the King’s Road, putting him right at the heart of one of London’s most rebellious and influential cultural movements.

A larger-than-life character with his finger firmly on the punk rock pulse, Nigel found himself at the centre of a scene that would go on to define a generation. As he puts it: “I was in the right place… Chelsea… at the right age… 20… at the right time, 1975/76… and ready for a five-year party to begin!”

From the King’s Road to the punk clubs, shops and streets that made 1970s Chelsea legendary, Nigel experienced the era from the inside – and helped shape its unmistakable spirit.
