King’s Road
King’s Road

King’s Road stands amongst London’s premier retail destinations, featuring a diverse collection of fashionable boutiques, distinctive brands, and luxury outlets.

This celebrated thoroughfare merges its regal heritage with an extraordinary legacy as the cradle of the twentieth century’s most influential cultural phenomena. The street continues to embody glamour and bohemian spirit through its vibrant blend of modern fashion, contemporary art, exceptional dining, and sophisticated drinking establishments.

King Charles II sought a discreet route between St James’s Palace and Kew, away from public attention. His solution involved creating an exclusive pathway (The King’s Road) during the late 1600s, establishing Chelsea’s reputation for sophistication. The route remained restricted for decades, with access monitored by three checkpoints positioned strategically along its course. Entry demanded presentation of a unique copper token, one side inscribed with The King’s Private Road and the reverse displaying the royal cipher.

Public access commenced in 1830, coinciding with the area’s transformation into a haven for artists, writers, and free-thinking individuals who profoundly shaped its character and cemented its reputation. Read the full history here.
