Lloyd Johnson

Lloyd Johnson

Designer

Lloyd Johnson is a British designer, outfitter and cultural figure whose work has played a defining role in the visual identity of British youth culture, music and style for more than five decades.

Beginning in 1967 with a stall in Kensington Market – then one of London’s most influential destinations for independent fashion and counterculture – Johnson became known for creating clothing that drew on the sharp tailoring of modernism while capturing the energy and attitude of contemporary street culture. His distinctive eye for silhouette, authenticity and subcultural style quickly established him as a destination for musicians, artists and those shaping the creative landscape of the time.

From 1978 until 2000, Johnson’s iconic shop, Johnson’s The Modern Outfitters, based at The World’s End on the King’s Road, became a landmark of British style. More than a fashion store, it was a meeting place and cultural touchpoint – attracting generations of musicians, performers and creatives looking for clothing that carried identity, individuality and attitude.

Across both Kensington Market and The World’s End, Johnson dressed and influenced many of the defining bands and artists of the era. His work became woven into the visual language of British music culture, with musicians regularly turning to Johnson’s tailoring and styling as an extension of their creative expression. His approach connected classic British craftsmanship with the spirit of rebellion and reinvention that defined successive generations.

Known for championing modernist tailoring, rock and roll elegance and an unmistakably British sensibility, Johnson’s influence extends far beyond the garments themselves. His shops became part of London’s cultural history – places where fashion, music and youth culture intersected and evolved.

Today, Lloyd Johnson’s legacy continues to be recognised as one of the most enduring and authentic voices in British style: a designer and outfitter whose work helped shape not only how artists dressed, but how entire eras were remembered.
