From his meteoric ascent to literary prominence five decades ago for his incisive, uncompromising tales of passion and longing, to his recent explorations of climate catastrophe and artificial intelligence, Ian McEwan’s remarkable body of work maintains one constant thread: his surgical ability to examine both the constant complexities of human nature and the tumultuous challenges that define our era.
At Chelsea Arts Festival he will meet George Monbiot at Cadogan hall to unveil McEwan’s latest book What We Can Know. Together they will embark on an exploration of humanity’s remarkable resilience and an expedition through a climate-altered Britain where hope persists. This event will be hosted by How To Academy.
Ian McEwan has earned critical recognition for his seventeen novels and his collections of short stories. His debut publication, the short story anthology First Love, Last Rites, secured the Somerset Maugham Award. He also wrote The Child in Time, recipient of the 1987 Whitbread Novel of the Year Award; The Cement Garden; Enduring Love; Amsterdam, which claimed the 1998 Booker Prize; Atonement; Saturday; On Chesil Beach; Solar; Sweet Tooth; The Children Act; Nutshell; Machines Like Me, achieving number-one bestseller status, and Lessons. Several titles including Atonement, Enduring Love, The Children Act, and On Chesil Beach have led to cinematic adaptations.
