David Shrigley OBE is one of those unique artists, such as Andy Warhol or Keith Haring, who is recognised within the art world but whose reach extends far beyond to impact our wider culture. In 2016, he was awarded the Fourth Plinth Commission for Trafalgar Square and was nominated for the Tate’s Turner Prize in 2013. His works are found in major global collections, including MOMA, New York and Tate Britain, London.
His spontaneous sketches and handwritten texts typically employ understated humour whilst capturing random observations that resemble fragments of overheard dialogue. Consistent motifs and preoccupations thread through his narratives, presenting intentionally 2D worldviews, extraterrestrial and animalistic perspectives, or the obsessive behaviour of a shouting eavesdropper. Although drawing remains his primary medium, David Shrigley explores a wide range of art forms encompassing sculpture, monumental installations, animation, painting, photography, and musical composition. He continually attempts to expand his reach by working beyond traditional gallery boundaries, publishing artist books and developing collaborative musical ventures.
He has recently illustrated a book written by Kate Bryan, How to Art. Join both of them at Chelsea Arts Festival to launch their new project.
